Poland temporarily closed part of its airspace due to objects flying in from Belarus, the Operational Command of the Armed Forces Branches said. The objects were believed to be balloons carrying contraband.

“During the night, objects entering Polish airspace from the direction of Belarus were detected. After detailed analysis, it was established that these were most likely contraband balloons moving in line with wind direction and speed. The flight of all objects was continuously monitored by radar systems. For safety reasons, part of the airspace over Podlasie was temporarily closed to civilian traffic,” the statement said.

The police and the Border Guard have not yet reported the discovery of weather balloons carrying contraband.

The command also reported that earlier today over international waters of the Baltic Sea, Polish fighter jets intercepted, identified and escorted a Russian reconnaissance aircraft that was flying near the border of Polish airspace.
