Chief national security adviser to the Lithuanian president Deividas Matulionis said on Žinių radijas that the drone that fell near the Belarusian border could have been a “Shahed”-type UAV. At the same time, he stressed that it is too early to draw final conclusions.

“Most likely, a ‘Shahed’, possibly of another type,” he said.

“Both Russians and Ukrainians use drones of various types, so we cannot say with certainty where this drone came from, where it was flying from, or where it was heading,” Matulionis added.

According to him, it remains to be determined whether the drone entered Lithuania accidentally after losing its course or whether it was a provocation.

“I would not venture to claim that this is a provocation on the part of Belarus, but of course we can never completely rule it out,” the presidential adviser said.

He noted that the Belarusian side had not warned Lithuania about the movement of the drone. Lithuania intends to inform its NATO allies about the incident.

Matulionis confirmed that military radars did not detect the object, likely because it was flying at a low altitude.

The drone fell on Monday morning in the Varėna District near Lake Lavysas.
