Russia and Belarus bear direct responsibility for the appearance of drones in the skies over the Baltic states. Threats by Moscow against EU member states are threats against the entire bloc. This is how European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen commented on recent events.
“Russia’s public threats against the Baltic states are completely unacceptable.
Let there be no doubt. A threat against one member state is a threat against our entire Union.
Russia and Belarus bear direct responsibility for drones threatening the lives and safety of people on our eastern flank.
Europe will respond with unity and strength. We will continue strengthening the security of our eastern flank through strong collective defence and preparedness at all levels”, her statement on X said.
Russia had previously threatened the Baltic states, accusing them of allegedly allowing Ukrainian drones to use their airspace. Yesterday, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service stated that drones were allegedly being prepared for launch from Latvian territory and issued threats toward the Baltic state.
Also on Tuesday, a NATO fighter jet shot down a drone in Estonian airspace. Today, air raid alerts were declared in Latvia and Lithuania due to a drone.
