The United States has reduced the number of brigade combat teams stationed in Europe from four to three, according to a Pentagon statement. The number of brigade groups has returned to the 2021 level.

“This decision was the result of a comprehensive, multi-level process focused on the deployment of U.S. forces in Europe. As a result, there is a temporary delay in the deployment of American troops in Poland, which is a model U.S. ally,” the statement said.

The final decision on the deployment of U.S. forces in Europe will be made by the department based on “further analysis of U.S. strategic and operational requirements, as well as the ability of our allies to provide forces for the defense of Europe.”

“This analysis is intended to advance President Trump’s ‘America First’ agenda in Europe and other regions, including by encouraging and enabling our NATO allies to assume primary responsibility for Europe’s conventional defense.

Secretary Hegseth spoke by phone this morning with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz, and the department will remain in close contact with its Polish counterparts as this analysis proceeds, including to ensure that the United States maintains a strong military presence in Poland. Poland has demonstrated both the capability and determination to defend itself. Other NATO allies should follow its example,” the statement said.
