Alyaksandr Lukashenka said that the United States is considering a deal to purchase a potash production facility in Belarus, with the key issue appearing to be the price.

In December last year, at the All-Belarusian People’s Assembly, Lukashenka stated that he had предложил the American side buy a potash mine and a “new plant” for $3 billion. He was most likely referring to the Nezhinsky Mining and Processing Plant, although he did not name it directly.

Commenting today on yesterday’s talks with U.S. Special Envoy John Cole, he confirmed that the price remains the same for now but could increase.

“They are thinking. But three billion is the minimum. And the government will calculate the reserves and other factors… It will be more expensive,” Lukashenka said, according to his press service.

“They are rich, but they do not want to pay big or even fair money. Everyone wants it for free,” he added.
