The Council of the European Union has officially extended sanctions imposed on Russia over its aggression against Ukraine for another 12 months. The measures will remain in force until July 31, 2027.
The sanctions have been extended for 12 months for the first time. Previously, the decisions had been renewed every six months. At the July 18-19 summit, EU leaders decided to extend the sanctions for one year at a time.
The sanctions were first introduced in 2014. They were significantly expanded following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022. The European Union is now working on its 21st package of sanctions.
