The Minsk Regional Executive Committee’s Internal Affairs Directorate reported the detention of a 39-year-old native of Brest Region who had returned to Belarus.

The reason for the man’s prosecution was “offensive comments directed at police officers” that he allegedly posted “in one of the Telegram channels of an extremist orientation” while abroad.

“It was established that in mid-2025 the individual went abroad for work. He returned to the Republic of Belarus this year to restore lost documents. It was at that moment that he was detained by law enforcement officers.

At present, measures are being carried out to establish other facts related to the detainee’s protest activity, and investigators have opened a criminal case for publicly insulting a government representative in connection with the performance of official duties,” said Deputy Head of the Main Directorate for Internal Security of the Interior Ministry for Minsk Region Siarhei Ramanouski.

The video released by the authorities includes footage of the man giving testimony. He says that while abroad he was part of an “extremist community” and posted comments there. He also admits guilt.

It should be noted that in Belarus, extremism-related charges are used to combat opponents of the authorities and dissent in general.
