The Belarusian Investigative Committee has announced that it is conducting an inquiry into an alleged attack by Polish security forces on a 60-year-old native of Slonim.

According to the Belarusian side, the man was in Poland on the night of May 12 and was driving along the S8 road near the town of Syców when Polish security officers opened fire on him. Belarusian authorities described the shooting as “completely unjustified.”

The driver suffered severe gunshot wounds to the head and limbs, while his vehicle sustained 29 bullet holes.

“Despite his injuries, he managed to cross the border, from where he was urgently transported to a medical facility in an extremely serious condition,” the press release said.

“During investigative actions and оперативно-розыскные мероприятия, investigators reconstructed the events, obtained reliable information about the location of the attack, as well as the police officers who fired at the Belarusian citizen. This incident will receive a strict legal assessment, and detailed information about the circumstances of what happened will later be made public,” the Investigative Committee stated.

As previously reported, on May 18 the Interior Ministry said that a 60-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the head and leg had been hospitalized in the Hrodna region. It was claimed that he sustained the injuries in Poland. Today, the Belarusian Foreign Ministry stated that on May 12 the man had been shot by Polish law enforcement officers, who allegedly mistook him for a member of a criminal group. According to the Belarusian side, an investigation into the incident has been launched in Poland. No further details were provided.
