The Viasna Human Rights Center has commented on an attack on the Paleskaya Viasna website. Today, Telegram channels close to the security forces reported that the website had been hacked and that access had been obtained to an email service.
Human rights defenders acknowledge that the website was hacked but stress that the email service was not connected to Viasna’s main website.
“The Paleskaya Viasna website was indeed hacked. At the same time, it is important to note that the website had not been updated for almost two years and at that point effectively existed as an archive of previous publications.
The Paleskaya Viasna website and the email service mentioned in the report were not connected to the organization’s main website, spring96.org, or to Viasna’s other information resources. These resources, as well as official email accounts and, accordingly, inquiries sent through them, are secure.
At present, the Viasna Human Rights Center continues to investigate the situation involving the mailbox mentioned in the security forces’ report and any possible access to it”, the statement said.
Viasna also stressed that information about an alleged leak of the organization’s financial data is untrue.
“Such statements have no basis and are part of yet another attempt by the security agencies to discredit the organization’s activities”, the statement said.
