Lithuania has received information about possible provocations by Russia, President Gitanas Nausėda said in an interview with BNS.
“We are receiving such signals from our services. They do not allow us to clearly determine the location or time, because that is simply impossible, as the other side may not always be at the final stage of the planning process, and we only know about the planning itself or the objective itself. It is true, I cannot deny that we have such information and that it concerns kinetic operations, not large-scale ones, but nevertheless targeted operations that could very likely be directed against critical infrastructure facilities.
To this end, I mobilised and convened the responsible services, and we made decisions aimed at strengthening the protection of these facilities. But when we convey such messages, or when my colleagues in other countries convey them, in a sense this also has a preventive nature, because we are simply stating and demonstrating that we are aware of the intentions of an unfriendly state to the East, and that they should know that we are aware”, he said.
Nausėda said the plans could involve damaging critical infrastructure.
“Anything that could simply halt the operation of these facilities should be a matter of primary concern to us, since the facilities themselves are important not only in their own right but also for the functioning of the entire system, in particular for our synchronisation with the continental European system”, he said, adding that this concerned both energy and transport infrastructure.
Nausėda also said the information did not concern Lithuanian territory. “Neighbouring countries” was how he described the possible locations of the provocations.
