In Latvia, a migrant smuggler triggered a police chase and rammed a border guards’ vehicle, the Latvian Border Guard Service reported.
On May 13, border guards received information about a suspicious vehicle traveling on the Krāslava–Dagda road. Officers in a marked service vehicle with flashing lights attempted to stop the car, but the driver ignored the order and accelerated. The driver passed through Krāslava without following traffic rules, carrying out several dangerous maneuvers, and headed toward Daugavpils.
After spotting a second service vehicle ahead, the driver deliberately crashed into it without attempting to avoid the collision. The impact threw the suspect’s vehicle onto the opposite side of the road, where it collided with a third car. Two border guards were inside the service vehicle at the moment of the crash. They sustained minor injuries.
The migrant smuggler turned out to be an Uzbek citizen without a driver’s license. He was transporting two Iranians and two Indian citizens who had previously crossed the Belarusian-Latvian border illegally. The migrants were taken to hospital with fractures and spinal injuries. The driver did not require hospitalization.
A criminal case has been opened against the driver.
