The Lithuanian Armed Forces on Saturday issued a yellow-level air alert to residents of Vilnius County after radar detected an object displaying characteristics typically associated with unmanned aerial vehicles. The alert was quickly cancelled.
It later emerged that a meteorological balloon, rather than a drone, had entered the country’s airspace. This was stated by Lithuanian Defence Minister Robertas Kaunas, LRT reported.
Residents of the county received SMS messages urging them to remain calm and resume their normal activities. The military also reminded the public that anyone spotting a suspicious flying or fallen object should call 112 and avoid approaching it.
