On 9 April, a concert by Maria Kalesnikava will take place at Berlin’s Radialsystem. The musician and one of the leaders of the Belarusian democratic opposition will appear before the public as an artist for the first time since her release.

Maria developed the #freemaria project together with renowned director Jochen Sandig. It is an attempt to reflect on the events of 2020 and the years that followed through the prism of art and personal experience.

At the centre of the performance are questions of dignity, responsibility for one’s own decisions and the resilience of the human spirit. Maria will speak with the audience about love for family and country, as well as about the strength that allows a person to remain free even under enormous external pressure.

“Perhaps art will not save the world, but it can give people strength and bring salvation. This is the understanding that Maria Kalesnikava wants to share with all of us,” the event announcement says.

It is worth recalling that only recently Maria Kalesnikava personally received the International Charlemagne Prize in Aachen, which had been awarded to her in absentia back in 2022. Her appearance in Berlin is a symbolic return to the European cultural space.

The performance at Radialsystem combines music, art and philosophical reflection, creating an “inner space of the soul”.

Tickets for the event can be purchased here.
