Lithuania is debating new restrictions for those linked to Belarus and Russia, LRT reports.

In the neighbouring country, discussions regularly arise over concerts by Russian artists, including their stance on Russia’s war against Ukraine. Such events are often cancelled at the demand of the public. On Monday, Vilnius Mayor Valdas Benkunskas appealed to the Seimas Committee on National Security and Defence with a proposal to enshrine in legislation a ban on performances by artists who are active in Russia and Belarus.

On Wednesday, Prime Minister Inga Ruginienė responded to the mayor’s initiative. She suggested that Benkunskas move from words to action and prepare a relevant draft proposal.

“So far Valdas Benkunskas has only been talking. Real actions must be demonstrated and, apparently, a draft should be prepared,” she said.

Ruginienė also noted that a broader interpretation is possible, for example, restrictions could apply not only to singers but also to actors, artists and entrepreneurs.

“Then, probably, if such a discussion were to take place, it should be conducted on a broader scale, without narrowing it down to a single issue,” she said.

Last week, Interior Minister Vladislav Kondratovič banned rapper Gio Pika, whose real name is Georgiy Dzhioev, from entering Lithuania.

It should be noted that a bill extending restrictions for Belarusians and Russians for another year is currently before the Seimas. During consideration of such bills, politicians usually propose amendments. Thus, this year Lithuanian conservatives have again proposed introducing restrictions on the purchase of real estate. Last year, such an initiative was not supported.
