A Minsk resident has become the subject of a criminal case for unlawful acquisition of computer information. This was reported by the Interior Ministry press service.
A representative of an IT company contacted the police, reporting the unauthorised extraction of confidential data belonging to 9 million users of a gaming platform.
A former employee of the company was involved in the incident. The 43-year-old Minsk resident had been dismissed for failing to cope with his duties, the Interior Ministry said. However, access credentials to the corporate resource remained stored on his laptop. The man used them to download the database.
“After that, the suspect contacted one of his former managers, began blackmailing him with the disclosure of the data and demanded a large sum of money. He planned to use the proceeds to buy a new car,” the statement said.
The name of the company has not been disclosed.
