The Coordination Council has recommended Mikalai Kazlou for the position of Representative of the United Transitional Cabinet (UTC) for the restoration of legality and law and order. The decision was adopted by a majority vote on March 12 following hearings of the candidate at a general meeting of the Council.

A total of 44 delegates took part in the vote with a quorum present: 35 voted in favor, 6 against, and 3 abstained. Five delegates from the Nastup faction and one from the Team of Latushka and the For Freedom movement voted against.

It should be recalled that the proposal to nominate Kazlou for the position of the United Transitional Cabinet’s Representative for the restoration of law and order was submitted to the Coordination Council by Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya. She informed the council that he is currently involved in drafting new legislative proposals concerning the reform of the law enforcement system and the security structures.

Kazlou is a former criminal investigation officer who resigned from the police in 2009 in protest against falsifications in the parliamentary elections. In 2022 he was sentenced to two and a half years in prison and recognized as a political prisoner. After serving his sentence, he left Belarus due to the threat of new criminal prosecution. Since 2018 he has headed the United Civic Party. He is a laureate of the 2023 Bush–Thatcher Prize for Freedom.
