Belarusian border guards prevented a citizen of Burundi from leaving the country after she attempted to cross through the Brest checkpoint.

At exit control, the woman presented a Belgian passport that raised suspicions among the border guards. They determined that the document belonged to another person.

According to the Burundi national, who studies at a Belarusian university, she could not enter the European Union due to a lack of a visa, so she borrowed her sister’s passport in an attempt to enter Poland and continue on to Belgium.

“The foreign national has been detained. Administrative proceedings have been initiated for attempting to illegally cross the border. In addition to a substantial fine of up to 100 base units, the violator also faces criminal liability for using a knowingly forged document,” the State Border Committee said in its statement.
