The Zheleznodorozhny District Court of Vitsyebsk found the deputy chief engineer of one of Belarus’ oil refining enterprises guilty of accepting bribes.
He was accused of accepting bribes totaling 29.164 million Russian rubles. According to the case, the deputy chief engineer received money from a foreign legal entity in exchange for modifying technical documentation and providing procurement information to give the bribe-paying company a competitive advantage.
“Through his deliberate unlawful actions, he concealed the improper operation of the purchased catalyst system and allowed the oil refinery to submit knowingly false information regarding the implementation of the company’s plan aimed at improving product quality. He also confirmed that the foreign company had fulfilled its contractual obligations.
As a result, the oil refinery unjustifiably transferred nearly 1.94 million Russian rubles to the company, causing particularly large-scale financial damage to the enterprise,” the Supreme Court’s press service said.
The court sentenced him to 13 years in prison to be served in a medium-security penal colony, imposed a fine of 5,000 base units, and barred him for five years from holding positions involving administrative and managerial responsibilities or the performance of legally significant actions. The court also ordered the recovery of 1.07 million Belarusian rubles in favor of the state.
