Dzianis Kuchynski, an adviser to Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya, met in Vilnius with Indrė Gasperė, head of Lithuania’s Migration Department. The meeting focused on the situation of Belarusians, as well as issues related to their legalization in Lithuania and the processing of various documents.
“The parties discussed the current migration situation, strengthening humanitarian support for Belarusians fleeing repression, as well as practical steps to simplify administrative procedures and facilitate the integration of the Belarusian community in Lithuania. Particular attention was paid to legalization mechanisms for Belarusians forced to leave the country for political reasons, as well as for released political prisoners,” the Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya said.
Kuchynski and Gasperė confirmed that people holding humanitarian residence permits in Lithuania can have civil status documents recognized without an apostille. The Office also asked anyone with a humanitarian residence permit who encounters such problems to get in touch.
Dzianis Kuchynski also presented Gasperė, who serves on the board of Regitra, with proposals from the Belarusian diaspora regarding adjustments to certain driver’s license procedures. In particular, the proposals called on the Lithuanian side to consider allowing the theoretical driving test to be taken in the Belarusian language. They also included simplifying the procedure for exchanging driver’s licenses for Belarusian citizens.
“The meeting also discussed the possibility of holding a thematic meeting between representatives of the Migration Department and Belarusian civil society organizations, business representatives and members of the Belarusian diaspora.
The Office of Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya will continue providing Lithuanian state authorities with practical recommendations from the Belarusian community and working to simplify administrative procedures for Belarusians in Lithuania,” the Office added.
