Lithuanian border guards have discovered another unfinished tunnel leading into Lithuania from Belarus.
The tunnel was found on Aug. 4 using special equipment near the village of Latežeris in the Druskininkai Municipality. The underground passage had been dug at a depth of about 1.5 metres. The section on Lithuanian territory is about 4 metres long. The tunnel was reinforced with boards and logs, while the entrance on the Belarusian side was covered with camouflage fabric.
Border guards believe the tunnel was being prepared for smuggling migrants into Lithuania.
The tunnel was filled in with earth. A pre-trial investigation has been launched, the Lithuanian State Border Guard Service reported.
This is already the third underground tunnel on the border with Belarus discovered by Lithuanian border guards in recent weeks. A total of 10 tunnels have been detected since the beginning of the year.
