Politician Mikalai Statkevich suffered a stroke on January 21. This was reported by Radyyo Svaboda, citing informed sources.
Statkevich is currently at his home in Minsk. As a result of the stroke, his speech has been impaired.
The release of the political prisoner was reported today by his wife, Marina Adamovich.
“Currently there are problems with speech. Otherwise everything is normal. Everything will be fine,” she wrote.
Mikalai Statkevich was sentenced in 2021 in the “Tsikhanouski case” to 14 years in prison. He was accused of organizing mass unrest. In the penal colony, he spent a long time in incommunicado detention.
Mikalai Statkevich was among 52 political prisoners who were released on September 11, 2025. All of them were taken to Lithuania. However, Statkevich refused to leave; he ran out of the bus and remained on the territory of Belarus. For several hours, he stayed between two border checkpoints, and later he was taken away by men in masks.
Later, media outlets reported that Statkevich was again being held in prison in Hlybokaye, but this information was not officially confirmed. Marina Adamovich filed a missing persons report with the police.
