The Russian Foreign Ministry issued a statement in connection with the strikes launched in the morning of February 28 by the armed forces of the United States and Israel against Iranian territory.

The ministry described the events as a “premeditated and unprovoked act of armed aggression” against a sovereign UN member state and demanded the immediate return of the situation to the framework of political and diplomatic settlement. Russia declared its readiness to assist in the search for a peaceful solution.

The Foreign Ministry also expressed condemnation that the strikes were carried out during an ongoing negotiation process. It warned of the risks of a “humanitarian, economic, and radiological catastrophe” in the Middle East and of the escalation of a “spiral of violence” in the region.

“The grave consequences of these reckless steps for the global non-proliferation regime, the cornerstone of which is the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, are being openly ignored. At the same time, the US-Israeli tandem is hiding behind a feigned concern about preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Bombing nuclear facilities that are under IAEA safeguards is unacceptable,” the ministry stated.

The Russian side called on the international community, including the leadership of the United Nations and the International Atomic Energy Agency, to assess the developments.
