Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha said Kyiv’s proposal to Vladimir Putin for ending the war is realistic and achievable. He stressed that Putin must recognise that he will never achieve his objectives on the battlefield.

“Ukraine’s proposal to Putin for ending the war is realistic and achievable. It is a chance for his regime to avoid collapse,” Sybiha said on June 7 during the panel discussion “Changing Roles: Ukraine as a Guarantor of Europe’s Security, Rethinking Dependencies” held on the sidelines of the NATO summit in Ankara, Türkiye.

According to Sybiha, the war will end if the cost of continued Russian aggression increases through sanctions, the use of frozen assets and international isolation.

The Ukrainian foreign minister also welcomed China’s willingness to play a more active role in achieving peace. Preparations are currently under way for Sybiha to visit China at Beijing’s invitation.

Sybiha also stressed that Ukraine no longer requires permission from third countries to strike military targets in Russia with its own weapons. He outlined four key elements of a sustainable peace:

  • legally binding bilateral security guarantees from the United States;
  • the deployment of partner forces on Ukrainian territory with US support;
  • Ukraine’s membership in the European Union as part of the security guarantee system;
  • strengthening Ukraine’s Armed Forces and a support package to deter future Russian aggression.
