Lithuania’s policy towards Belarus will remain unchanged despite new wording in the government programme of Mindaugas Sinkevičius, the Lithuanian president’s office has said. This was stated by Paulius Baltokas, an adviser to the Lithuanian president on domestic policy.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Mindaugas Sinkevičius presented his government’s programme. The programme of the previous cabinet, led by Inga Ruginienė, included a commitment to take “active measures to further maintain the international isolation of Russia and Belarus.” As LRT reports, the new programme mentions only Russia in this context: “Active measures to further maintain the international isolation of Russia.” Belarus has been removed from the wording.

Commenting on the change for BNS, Baltokas stressed that Lithuania’s position towards the Belarusian government and European Union sanctions remains unchanged.

Another amendment to the programme concerns the Belarusian Nuclear Power Plant (BelNPP). It states that the government will continue to raise the issue of the plant’s safety at international forums and ensure Belarus’s compliance with the highest standards of nuclear safety and environmental protection.

The Lithuanian president’s office noted that the threat stems not only from the specific facility but also from the current Belarusian authorities and their hybrid attacks.
