Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov described statements by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy about a possible attack from Belarusian territory as incitement.
“We do not think such statements deserve any comment. Belarus is our ally, we have a Union State with Belarus. But it is a sovereign state. Therefore, such statements are nothing more than an attempt at further incitement aimed at prolonging the war and escalating tensions,” he said, according to TASS.
As previously reported, following a meeting on Friday with the leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces General Staff, military intelligence, the Foreign Intelligence Service and the Security Service of Ukraine, Zelenskyy said Russia was trying to draw Belarus deeper into the war against Ukraine and was considering plans for operations from Belarusian territory against Ukraine or a NATO member state.
“We know that additional contacts took place between the Russians and Alyaksandr Lukashenka, aimed at persuading him to join new Russian aggressive operations.
In particular, Russia is considering plans for operations in directions south and north from Belarusian territory — either against the Chernihiv-Kyiv direction in Ukraine or against one of the NATO countries — specifically from Belarusian territory. Ukraine has details of the conversation between Russia and Belarus,” Zelenskyy said.
