Another eight Belarusian citizens injured in a traffic accident on Aug. 12 have been discharged from hospitals in Georgia. Five of them are minors. The Belarusian Foreign Ministry reported this, BelTA reports.
This brings the number of injured Belarusian tourists who have left medical facilities to 12. Four people were discharged on Aug. 14.
The tragedy occurred in the Guria region, on the 16th kilometer of the road to the mountain resort of Gomismta in Ozurgeti municipality. A minibus carrying Belarusian tourists left the road, fell into a ravine and crashed into a tree. The driver managed to jump out of the vehicle as it was falling.
Four people were killed in the crash and another 16 were injured, including five minors.
According to an investigation by Georgia’s Interior Ministry, the driver did not have the appropriate category of driving license required to transport such a number of passengers and failed to ensure safe operation of the minibus. He was detained and charged under Part 8 of Article 276 of Georgia’s Criminal Code for violating traffic safety rules by a person operating a vehicle, resulting in the deaths of more than two people. The offense carries a sentence of up to 10 years in prison.
The repatriation of the remains of the first two Belarusian victims is expected to be arranged soon. The remains of two other victims are planned to be sent to Belarus early next week.
