Nelli Vadanosava, the mother of TV host and singer Kaciaryna Vadanosava, died on 1 January. Vadanosava announced the news on Facebook.
“For 34 years my mother waited to reunite with my father. I hope they are already together. And now I am a full orphan. My mother has died,” she wrote.
On 23 December, Nelli Vadanosava became unwell in the bathroom and fell. She was taken to hospital by ambulance, where doctors found she had suffered a stroke. Surgeons removed a blood clot through a vessel.
A year earlier, Vadanosava had survived a heart attack after officers of the Belarusian KGB came to her home. She later obtained a Lithuanian visa, left Belarus for Poland—where her daughter lives—and applied for international protection. Poland refused the application due to the Lithuanian visa. A court ordered her deportation to Lithuania, but the decision was later overturned.
