A Ukrainian citizen waded across a pond on the Belarus-Lithuania border and requested asylum in Lithuania.
On the night of Aug. 1, Lithuanian border guards recorded an illegal border crossing near the village of Jurgonis in the Šalčininkai district. Cameras showed a man wading across Jurgonis Pond and attempting to come ashore on Lithuanian territory.
The violator was detained. He turned out to be a 35-year-old Ukrainian citizen. He was carrying an identity document, the Lithuanian Border Guard Service reports.
The detainee was taken to a border post and a pretrial investigation was launched. On Aug. 1, during questioning by an investigator, he submitted an application for asylum in Lithuania. The Ukrainian was taken to the Foreigners’ Registration Centre in Pabradė.
