The Latvian government intends to extend the enhanced border regime on the border with Belarus for another six months. At present, it is in force until 31 December. A draft order provides for its extension until 30 June 2026, Delfi reports.
The enhanced regime applies in border regions with Belarus: in Ludza and the rural districts of the Ludza Municipality, in the rural districts of the Krāslava Municipality, in the Augšdaugava Municipality, in Daugavpils, and in the Kaunata rural district of the Rēzekne Municipality.
According to the Latvian Interior Ministry, this year border guards have prevented 11,847 attempts by migrants to cross the border. At the same time, 31 people were allowed into the country on humanitarian grounds.
