The International Handball Federation (IHF) has lifted its ban on Belarusian and Russian teams, officials, referees, lecturers and experts participating in its competitions and events. The decision took effect immediately, the IHF press service said.
The decision followed recommendations by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Executive Board approved on May 7 and July 7, 2026, the federation said.
The IHF noted that the process of allowing athletes to return had taken place in stages. In March 2026, Belarusian and Russian youth national teams were allowed to participate in friendly matches and tournaments provided they signed a declaration stating that they had no links to military or security structures. In May, the federation also allowed for the possibility of granting teams from Belarus and Russia special invitations, or wild cards, to the Girls’ U16 World Championship and the IHF Nations Trophy.
The federation also said that, together with the International Testing Agency (ITA), it would ensure compliance with all anti-doping requirements as Russian athletes return to international competitions. No additional eligibility criteria or other restrictions will be applied.
“The IHF recognises that full reintegration may require a transitional period for both Russian and Belarusian teams and officials. Nevertheless, the IHF looks forward to welcoming them back into the international handball community and hopes that, with the support and cooperation of all stakeholders, the necessary steps will be taken to ensure a timely and effective return”, the press release said.
At the same time, the IHF said it continued to support the Ukrainian Handball Federation, condemned the Russia-Ukraine war and hoped for its swift end and the restoration of international sporting cooperation.
