The State Committee of Forensic Examinations reported an unusual case during a banknote authenticity check. Two €500 banknotes of the 2002 series were submitted for examination. Their authenticity had raised doubts at a branch of a bank in Hrodna.

“According to the conclusions of the forensic expert, the examined items were produced by the enterprise that manufactures this type of product, using regulated printing methods with protective elements.

Doubts about authenticity were caused by the absence of a kinegram and luminescence of certain images on the front and back sides, as well as the absence of part of the security thread.

Forensic experts established that the discrepancies in the banknotes were due to deviations from the technological process that occurred during production,” the committee said.

This is not the first such case. In 2021, experts also examined defective euro notes. A €50 banknote that a Hrodna resident attempted to deposit at a bank lacked a hologram. Experts determined that the money was genuine. The absence of a hologram may be caused by a manufacturing defect; another possibility is that criminals carefully removed the hologram for later use in counterfeiting.

Last year, the State Committee of Forensic Examinations also confirmed the authenticity of defective US $100 banknotes.
