The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe will prepare a report on the situation in Belarus. The decision was taken by the bureau of the organisation, the Coordination Council said.
The report is titled “The Role of Local and Regional Authorities in Supporting Belarusian Democratic Forces and Civil Society in Exile”.
“The main political goal of this report is to define the role of European local and regional authorities in protecting and supporting Belarusian democratic forces and civil society in exile, as well as to provide recommendations on integration,” the Coordination Council said.
The document will be based on a resolution of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. It is intended to encourage the active participation of Belarusians in local processes within European communities. The initiative aims to consolidate local and regional efforts to protect democratic actors in exile. The experience gained by Belarusians in European municipalities will serve as a basis for decentralisation and the development of local self-government in a democratic Belarus.
“The preparation of such a report is the result of the systematic work of the Coordination Council delegation at the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe and an important step towards recognising Belarusian civil society as a full-fledged partner at the European level,” the Coordination Council added.
