Brest Region Prosecutors Seek ‘Extremist’ Designation for 117 Resources Since Start of Year

During the first half of the year, prosecutors in Brest Region submitted 117 applications to the courts seeking to have online resources designated as “extremist materials.”

Prosecutors requested that 34 Instagram accounts, 24 TikTok accounts, 23 Threads accounts, eight websites, seven Facebook accounts, six VKontakte accounts, six YouTube channels, five Telegram channels, three accounts on X, three Zen channels and two mobile applications be recognised as “extremist.”

Among the resources designated as “extremist” at the request of Brest prosecutors were the Threads account “kyky_org,” the Instagram account “bulbamovie,” and the TikTok communities “Poyas Belavezhy,” “Pa Pershaye, Ya z Pinska” and “Ne Luninets, a Luninets.” Access has also been restricted to the websites grеenphone.help and 100dаys.pl.

Prosecutors also referred 10 other information resources to the Brest Regional Expert Commission for the Evaluation of Information Products.

In Belarus, accusations of extremism are widely used by the authorities in their campaign against Aliaksandr Lukashenka‘s opponents and dissent more broadly.
