A human rabies infection case was recorded in Belarus in April this year.
The disease was diagnosed in a resident of the Mahiliou region who had been scratched by a stray cat. The woman did not seek medical assistance and did not undergo a course of anti-rabies vaccinations, the Health Ministry reports.
No information was provided about the woman’s further condition.
Rabies is a fatal disease. The appearance of clinical symptoms indicates that the disease has entered the acute phase and recovery is impossible: a person dies from paralysis of the respiratory system or cardiac arrest. The only effective means of preventing rabies is a course of anti-rabies vaccinations, which should be started as soon as possible after contact with an infected animal.
