Around 100 Lithuanian trucks are still in Belarus after being detained by the Belarusian side following Vilnius’ closure of the border with Belarus at the end of last year. This was reported by head of the freight carriers’ association Erlandas Mikėnas.
“Around 100 trucks belonging to members of our association are still in Belarus,” he said, 15min.lt reports.
According to Mikėnas, the truck owners have most likely decided to abandon them.
“The situation is that the fee for forced long-term parking at sites in Belarus is higher than the value of the truck itself. The economic calculation suggests the decision,” Mikėnas said.
It should be recalled that under the conditions set by the Belarusian side, Lithuanian carriers had to pay for storing their trucks at parking facilities in order to get them back. Around 4,000 vehicles were detained in the country in total. Almost all of them have since left. However, as early as spring, when trucks began returning from Belarus, industry representatives noted that the residual value of some of them could be significantly lower than the fee required to bring the vehicles home.
