A petition has been submitted to the management of the Museum of the Battle of Grunwald, calling for the installation of a banner featuring the white-red-white flag, the historic national symbol of the Belarusian people, on the grounds of the Grunwald battlefield.
The Battle of Grunwald in 1410 was one of the most important events in the history of the peoples of Central and Eastern Europe. In that battle, Poles, Belarusians, Lithuanians, Ukrainians, Tatars and representatives of other European peoples jointly defended their states — the Kingdom of Poland and the Grand Duchy of Lithuania — against the external aggression of the Teutonic Order. It was a struggle for the right to live on their own land, preserve their culture, faith and freedom.
The joint victory proved decisive and transformative. It eliminated the threat of conquest by external invaders for the peoples of this part of Europe for centuries and made Grunwald a symbol of unity, mutual support and shared responsibility for the future.
Today, national flags of Poland and Lithuania stand on the Grunwald battlefield in memory of those events. They serve as a reminder of the peoples who fought together for freedom and prevailed.
Belarusians were also an integral part of that victory. Therefore, installing the Belarusian national white-red-white banner alongside the Polish, Lithuanian and Ukrainian flags would be an act of historical justice and solidarity among our peoples.
