Italy is reintroducing border controls with Spain amid the migration crisis in Ceuta. The controls will remain in place for one month, starting on Aug. 1.
“The Ministry of the Interior has ordered the reintroduction of controls at the maritime and air borders with Spain. The decision was taken following a meeting of the Committee for the Analysis of the Migration Situation and Border Security, which I chaired this morning at the Ministry of the Interior,” Italian Interior Minister Matteo Piantedosi said.
Italy will also strengthen controls along its border with France.
The measures are intended to verify the legality of the movement of non-EU nationals within the Schengen area, Piantedosi said.
In recent days, tens of thousands of migrants have entered Spain’s North African enclave of Ceuta illegally from Morocco. According to Spain’s Ministry of the Interior, 50,000 people arrived in Ceuta, but as of July 31, more than 48,000 had already left the enclave.
