The special-purpose unit “Buran” of the Internal Troops in the Homiel region has been transformed into a separate military unit No. 3033. This was announced by Deputy Interior Minister — Commander of the Internal Troops Mikalai Karpiankou during a meeting with journalists on the occasion of Internal Troops Day, BelTA reports.

According to him, in the near future the special-purpose unit “Shtorm” in the Brest region will also be transformed into a military unit. The capital’s military unit 5448 will become an operational-purpose unit, while military unit 3310 from the Minsk region will become a special-purpose brigade. In addition, a fourth unmanned aviation center will be created in “Buran” — three similar centers are already operating within the Internal Troops.

Karpiankou explained the logic behind the development of special units, referring to the experience of suppressing “color revolutions” in Georgia, Serbia and Iran.

“While improving our organizational and staffing structure, we take into account the military-political situation surrounding the Republic of Belarus. We have tried to significantly improve not only the personnel component but also to strengthen our combat capabilities. We paid great attention to special-purpose units. Why them? By analyzing attempts at color revolutions in Georgia, Serbia and Iran, we saw that the best results in suppressing them were demonstrated by special-purpose units.

Professional, well-armed and mobile, they successfully cope with all provocations and carry out special operations to neutralize the leaders and instigators of mass unrest. The experience of modern armed conflicts has also shown that special-purpose units successfully perform a wide range of combat tasks,” he said.

According to him, the combat potential of the special-purpose detachments has also been significantly increased.

“They received new weapons: grenade launchers, anti-tank guided missiles, flamethrowers, heavy machine guns, BTR-82 armored personnel carriers, as well as new unmanned aerial vehicles, to which we paid very great attention last year. We have created three unmanned aerial aviation centers within our forces. And now a fourth center will be created in the special-purpose unit ‘Buran’ in the Homiel region,” Karpiankou said.
