Polish Prosecutors Request European Arrest Warrant for Suspects in Sabotage Case

Poland’s National Prosecutor’s Office has taken the next step in the investigation into railway sabotage. According to spokesperson Przemysław Nowak, a motion has been submitted to the Warsaw District Court requesting a European Arrest Warrant for Ukrainian nationals Yevhenii Ivanov and Oleksandr Kononov. If issued, the warrant will be valid across the European Union.

A Polish court had earlier ordered pre-trial detention for the suspects, who were subsequently placed on the national wanted list.

The two men are suspected of carrying out acts of sabotage on Poland’s railway network in mid-November. They managed to leave the country for Belarus immediately after the incidents, before their identities had been established. Polish law-enforcement agencies also detained several individuals who had been in contact with them, but charges related directly to the sabotage were brought against only one detainee. The Ukrainian citizen remains in custody.
