A large shipment of contraband cigarettes from Belarus has been seized in Poland, the Polish Border Guard said.
A van with Polish registration plates was stopped by border guards and customs and tax service officers near Biała Podlaska on suspicion of illegally transporting excise goods.
During an inspection of the vehicle, officers discovered 1.78 million cigarettes of various brands bearing Belarusian excise stamps. The market value of the shipment is estimated at 1.5 million zlotys (around $400,000).
Two Polish citizens living in the Lublin Voivodeship were detained. They have been charged with possession and transportation of illegal excise goods.
