Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus Uladzimir Karanik does not rule out that Belarusian and Russian scientists could create a joint artificial intelligence language model.

“Developments in the field of artificial intelligence are being carried out by Russian and Belarusian scientists. We exchange the results obtained, but we are not trying to compete with well-known models. The main task is applied in nature. Artificial intelligence, specifically applied language models, that will be used in design, engineering, machine building and big data analysis.

In other words, we are focusing on the development of applied solutions using open-source language models. Active work is underway in this direction. I do not rule out that over time we will arrive at the creation of our own language model developed jointly by Russian and Belarusian scientists,” he said ahead of a joint session of the presidiums of the Belarusian and Russian Academies of Sciences, BelTA reported.

He added that the main goal is ensuring technological sovereignty.

“To organize the production on our territory of the microelectronics necessary to support technological processes. These are microchips required for the operation of technological equipment, space research and aviation. Therefore, work is being carried out in several directions.

This includes, naturally, developing competencies to master new technological processes. It also involves specialized lasers, photoresists and small-scale ultra-pure chemistry. I think that in the coming years we will be able to provide the critical technologies of our countries with the necessary equipment and microchips,” he said.

According to him, the meeting is also discussing megascience projects, joint access for Belarusian scientists to the largest research initiatives in fundamental science, and the training of scientific personnel.
