The leader of the “Free Choir,” Halina Kazimirouskaya, is battling cancer and is in need of support.
For many Belarusians, the name Halina Kazimirouskaya is a symbol of courage. Under her leadership, the Free Choir sang about freedom in 2020, turning music into a powerful instrument of protest. Halina endured arrest, interrogations, days in detention at Akrestsina and forced emigration. She now faces a new challenge that requires strength and resilience.
In exile in Warsaw, Halina opened an arts school to help fellow emigrants remain in the profession and continued the activities of the Free Choir across Europe. This work brought almost no income — the family relied on private vocal lessons.
A diagnosis of cancer has made it impossible for her to continue working. Halina is currently undergoing intensive chemotherapy, with surgery and radiotherapy ahead.
The illness has deprived Halina of the ability to teach. The family, with two minor children, has no means to pay for rent or food.
The toxicity of chemotherapy requires expensive medications to support the liver and other organs, as well as strong painkillers.
“Each course of chemotherapy is an exhausting battle. Every recovery takes several days, and just as you regain strength, a new dose of powerful drugs takes it away again.”
Support is needed for at least the next six months while the active phase of treatment continues. The total fundraising target is €8,500.
