Former Captain Of Belarus National Rugby Team Maryia Shakura Sentenced Under Political Article

The Minsk City Court has delivered a verdict against 35-year-old Maryia Shakura, the former captain of the Belarus national rugby team, Nasha Niva reported.

Shakura was convicted of “assisting extremist activity” under Part 1 of Article 361-4 of the Criminal Code. She was sentenced to “home chemistry,” a form of restricted freedom served at home. It is unknown when the criminal case was opened or whether the athlete was held in a pretrial detention center.

Maryia Shakura is a well-known Belarusian rugby player and a bronze medalist of the 2017 European Beach Rugby Championship. Alongside her sporting career, she worked in furniture manufacturing. In 2020 she was detained and sentenced to 10 days of administrative arrest.
