In Ukraine’s Volyn region, a 25-year-old resident of the Kovel district has been sentenced to 15 years in prison for cooperating with Belarusian special services. The court also ordered the confiscation of his property.
According to the Volyn Regional Prosecutor’s Office, in 2024 the accused agreed to cooperate with a Belarusian special service in exchange for payment. He photographed and filmed defensive fortifications near the Ukrainian-Belarusian border. Until May 2025, the man transmitted photos and videos to his handler and carried out other assignments “under conditions of covert and confidential cooperation.” He received payment for his work to a bank card.
The investigation was conducted by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) in the Volyn region. The accused remained in pre-trial detention until the court ruling.
“Hoping to receive financial compensation from Belarusian intelligence officers, the agent agreed to carry out their tasks. Among the main ones was monitoring the locations of checkpoints and fortified areas of the Defense Forces in northern border regions of Ukraine.
On instructions from the KGB, the suspect also attempted to identify military echelons moving along local railway lines or stationed at transit hubs of Ukrainian Railways.
To collect intelligence data, the agent surveyed the area, documented fortification structures of the Defense Forces, and marked their geolocations on Google Maps,” the SBU reported.
