Lithuanian Parliament Speaker Juozas Olekas began today’s parliamentary session by congratulating Belarusians on another anniversary of the country’s independence. Thirty-five years ago, on Aug. 25, 1991, the Supreme Council of the BSSR voted to give constitutional law status to the Declaration of State Sovereignty, adopted on July 27, 1990.
“I want to begin the session by congratulating our neighbors — the people of Belarus. Aug. 25 is an extremely important date in the history of independent Belarus,” he said, the Parliamentary Channel reports.
Olekas said today’s date was an opportunity to once again express strong support for Belarus’ democratic forces, and to wish them to maintain unity, ensure close coordination of their actions and remain as close as possible to the Belarusian people.
“We sincerely hope for the day when the rule of law is restored in Belarus, the people of the country can elect a president and parliament in free and fair elections, and Belarus becomes a full and respected member of our European family,” he said.
