Poland’s National Revenue Administration detained citizens of Belarus and Poland on suspicion of organizing the transportation of a large shipment of cigarettes.
A truck with Polish licence plates was stopped for inspection on the S8 expressway in the Mazowieckie Voivodeship. The driver, a 47-year-old Belarusian citizen, presented documents stating that the vehicle was carrying animal feed.
During the inspection of the truck, officers discovered 560,000 packs of cigarettes without Polish excise stamps. The shipment was valued at 11.5 million zlotys (just over $3 million).
The District Prosecutor’s Office in Białystok has launched an investigation into the truck driver, as well as a 37-year-old Polish citizen who owns the transport company. Both have been remanded in custody.
