Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya has proposed establishing regular contacts between the Bundestag and the Belarusian diaspora. She stated this at a meeting with the Bundestag’s parliamentary group “For Democratic Belarus,” held on the occasion of the launch of its work.
“I propose establishing regular contacts between the diaspora and the Bundestag. They have many ideas, but also many problems, and they need your support,” she said.
Tsikhanouskaya also offered other ideas to the MPs, including internships. This year, four Belarusians have interned in four Bundestag factions. Next year, each faction could host one or two young Belarusian politicians for internships.
She proposed holding a forum in Berlin that would bring together political prisoners and their “godparents” among European politicians.
“We want to bring together MPs who are ‘godparents’ to Belarusian political prisoners and invite former political prisoners or their families. The Bundestag currently has the largest number of such ‘godparents,’ so it would be wonderful if such a forum took place in Berlin,” she added.
Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya invited German parliamentarians to the next meeting of the international alliance of parliamentary groups supporting Belarusian democratic forces, scheduled to be held in London.
She also proposed establishing cooperation between the Bundestag’s parliamentary group and the Coordination Council and the United Transitional Cabinet.
