It is difficult to imagine summer without travel — and even more so without journeys alongside the famous “amateur historian” Yuras Zhygamont. In recent days, the well-known explorer of Belarusian towns and villages has published a new episode from his archive dedicated to the village of Mikalaeva.

Zhygamont visited the former township in the Iuje District in springtime. He appears before viewers wearing a black coat and hat rather than his familiar white summer suit. Yet his tireless curiosity remains unchanged. In the episode, Zhygamont рассказывает about notable figures associated with Mikalaeva, including archaeologist Leanid Pobal, educator Kanstantsin Tyzenhauz, and magnate Mikalai Kishka. He also highlights one of the village’s most remarkable archaeological discoveries — an eight-meter-long dugout boat carved from a single oak tree and dating back to the early 16th century. The vessel was discovered by local residents in the Neman River, on whose banks the village stands, in 2018.

As always, viewers warmly welcomed the latest installment of the well-known program.

The beloved project, familiar to several generations of Belarusians, resumed releasing episodes online last year. However, the return of “Travels With Zhygamont” provoked a strong reaction from state propagandists, who launched a media campaign aimed at discrediting Spadar Yuras.
