A man has been detained in Shumilina after allegedly trying to shoot a police officer with the officer’s own service weapon, the Interior Ministry press service reported. The incident occurred on April 16 at around 11 p.m.

The 46-year-old local resident had been detained for disorderly conduct while heavily intoxicated (2 promille). At his request, an ambulance was called, and a police officer accompanied him to the hospital.

At the medical facility, the detainee began arguing with medical staff and then suddenly attacked the police officer. During the struggle, he managed to seize the officer’s service weapon. The man pointed the gun at the officer’s head and pulled the trigger, but no shot was fired. The officer knocked the weapon out of the attacker’s hands, after which the man fled. Responding officers blocked off the surrounding area and detained him.

Interior Minister Ivan Kubrakou personally traveled to the scene. A criminal case has been opened for the attempted murder of a police officer.
