A Russian citizen was left without $99,000 at the Brest border crossing after Belarusian customs officers seized the money.
According to the State Customs Committee, the man was traveling from Moldova in a Mercedes-Benz with foreign registration. He went through the “red channel” to process the temporary import of the vehicle.
The man said he was carrying only personal belongings and about $900 in U.S. dollars.
“The inspector questioned the statement. During a subsequent inspection, a large sum of money was found under food products in a portable refrigerator, several times exceeding the amount permitted to be transported without declaration”, the statement said.
The money was seized pending a court decision. A criminal case has been opened against the man.
